Margaret Wilkinson
Margaret Wilkinson is a prose writer who has turned her attention to writing for radio, screen and stage. Her radio play, I Decided to Kill My Brother-In-Law After Dinner, starring Maureen Lipman, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2002. A new commission, I Married A Marxist, is due to be broadcast on 1 November 1 2003. She has recently scripted new versions of the parables: The Prodigal Son, The Good Samaritan and The Unforgiving Servant, set in Newcastle, for BBC Television, Religious Affairs. Her stage play, Pandora's Box, based on The Lulu plays by Wedekind, devised with Kneehigh Theatre Company, Cornwall and Northern Stage, Newcastle upon Tyne, toured England, March-May 2002. In 2001, her play, The Tiger's Bride, based on The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, was performed by Northern Stage, Newcastle upon Tyne. A new play, The Old Are Strong, was recently performed in Newcastle upon Tyne in a rehearsed reading by the RSC, starring Alan Howard. She is the recipient of a BBC Northern Exposure Award for Drama, New Writing North Drama Award and a Northern Stage Drama Attachment. Currently she is developing a screenplay for a feature film, The Grace Hotel. Her first novel, Ocean Avenue, was published by Serpent's Tail. Her short stories have appeared in various literary magazines, including Stand, The Printer's Devil and Writing Women. Her collected stories, titled, 1956, has been published by Diamond Twig. She is prose and script tutor on the MA degree course in creative writing at The University of Northumbria and also teaches undergraduates there. She is a past winner of an Arts Council Writers Award. She also writes a regular column, 'The Blank Page', for creative writing magazine Mslexia. She is the author of two books on creative writing: Mothers of Invention: A Creative Writing Workbook For Women, published jointly by Virago and The National Extension College, and Creative Writing, Its Role In Evaluation, published by The King's Fund. |
