A-Z of north east writers - Gavin Williams

Gavin Williams is in his early thirties and has been writing for 15 years, full-time since Jan 2001. He started his career as a short story writer, as well as reviewing film, music and books for magazines and on the internet (Gavin's short story, Brief People, won the Best Short Fiction award at the World Horror Convention 2000 in Denver, Colorado). During this period he specialised in fantastic fiction (science fiction, horror, fantasy) and his acclaimed novel, Hush (a collaboration with Tim Lebbon) was published by Razorblade Press in 2000 and was short-listed for a 2001 British Fantasy Society Award in Best Novel category (the August Derleth Award).

Since then, as he has also moved into writing for the screen, Gavin's writing has broadened out to include work in all genres and many styles, including children's TV, historical recreation, suspense, romance, and particularly comedy.

During 1999 Gavin took part in Scottish Screen's First Shot and Movie Makers workshops, then - after his successful first short film, Rob of the Rovers - he won a commission for HTV West's Western Lights talent strand, adapting his own short play Baited Breath for the screen (Baited Breath was originally performed at the Live Theatre, Newcastle, in autumn 2000 as part of its Northern Lines new writing festival).

Baited Breath was broadcast in summer 2001. It was directed by Jon Wilson and starred Stuart Wells (Billy Elliott). Rob of the Rovers starred Gary Lewis (Billy Elliott, Gangs of New York) and was long-listed for a BAFTA 2001. It was screened at the Bradford International Film Festival as part of the Best of British strand and was in competition at the INCURT Festival of European & Mediterranean Short Films in Lleida, Spain.

In 2001 Gavin received a Writer's Development Bursary from Yorkshire Television. This was one of five awards in the inaugural year of the scheme, and Gavin developed two original series ideas for Yorkshire - Daynight and Lipsticking - which then led to a full commission for a pilot episode of Lipsticking late in 2002.

Gavin's other television work includes a commission for the second series of Channel 5's Urban Gothic anthology series, and, for the BBC, writing five episodes of Ugetme, a teen drama set around an interactive radio station.

Gavin was commissioned by Pilgrim Films (Downtime, Killing Time) to write an original psychological horror feature film script. This project is currently unattached to a producer and available. Gavin's romantic comedy feature film, Another Girl, Another Planet is in pre-production with Pinball Films and CF1, Wales.

Additionally, Gavin supplied all scriptwriting requirements for The Newcastle Story, a new permanent exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle. This work included nine short Victorian film dramas and six historical audio pieces.
