South Shields sees new drama from Chaz Brenchley
Date: Thu 15 Mar 2007
Website: www.chazbrenchley.co.uk A Cold Coming, a new play by Chaz Brenchley, will be performed at South Shields Library Theatre on 3-5 April. “I haven’t written a play since my student days, except once in celebration of a city’s 900th birthday," says Chaz. “Last time I did, though, it was an end-of-the-universe science fiction piece. This time, not. I was invited to do it out of the blue, and took mere moments to realise two things: first, that I wanted to do it, very much; second, that I had all the material to hand already. I’ve been revisiting the same theme for years now in short stories and novellas, exploring the consequences on a disparate group of friends of acting as carers for a dying man. A stage play was another opportunity to examine the impacts of slow death on long relationships. And Peter had specifically said ‘not a comedy’, so I took him at his word. It is, I hope, a thoughtful piece; I hope it’s also shocking." You can read the director's blog here. Tickets: £8/£5 (concessions). Available from the Customs House (tel: 0191 454 1234).
